Team Makers is the national annual fund for NDSU Athletics.  Their primary function as a separate 501 (c) (3) foundation is to support NDSU Athletics financially so that student-athletes have the opportunity to reach their full potential academically, athletically and beyond.  All Team Maker funds currently support the overall student-athlete experience at NDSU which includes scholarships, academic success and facilities. This annual support comprises a significant portion of the athletic department operating budget.  As an affiliated NDSU organization, they are not allowed to do anything with NIL.

The Green and the Gold Collective is a totally separate company with no affiliation to NDSU or Team Makers.  The Collective exists to raise funds that are paid directly o NDSU student athletes in the form of NIL deals.  We provide three primary functions.  1) Aggressively find and arrange NIL deals between corporations and Bison Athletes.  These deals may or may not flow through the Collective.  It doesn’t matter to the Collective as there is no financial incentive for us either way.  2) Aggregate funds from individuals raised through the website with memberships and donations to fund NIL deals.  These NIL deals can take many forms, but usually are activities that support charities or promotion of the Collective.  3) Provide advisory services to Bison Athletes on anything to do with NIL through our experience with compliance, fair market value, financial literacy, etc.

Bottom line is Team Makers supports the Athletic Department operational expenses while the Collective supports the Athletes directly.  Both of these organizations are critical to the future success of NDSU Athletics.  As such, its important Bison Nation contributes to both of these groups.

Bison student athletes and you the fan!  The Collective and NIL deals are the only way for financial resources to go directly to student athletes.  Directly supporting student athletes enables sustained success and continuity in today’s environment of transfer portal instability with the goal of enhancing the fan experience and improving the student athlete quality of life.

The Collective’s entire purpose is to provide direct financial assistance to Bison Athletes through NIL deals.  As such, the money only goes to two places, 1) Expenses of the Collective, such as website development, payment processing software, licensing fees to use University logos and photos, and marketing campaigns to reach potential members and donors.  Luckily, we have been able to get contributions from a number of individual donors to help us cover many of these startup and operating expenses.    2) Everything not used for those business operation expenses gets paid directly to Bison Athletes in the form of NIL deals.  Per the original intent and compliance rules around NIL, we use these funds primarily for retention of current Bison Athletes.  It is our goal for more than 90% of membership fees and donations to be paid out in direct financial support of our student athletes.  The majority of Collectives pay out student athletes in the 70-75% range so we take pride in our expense ratio to better our student athletes.  The more donations we get the higher the percentage that goes to the student athletes since most of the operational expenses are a fixed cost.

For donations that are designated to a specific sport or athlete, 100% of that amount gets paid directly to the student athletes.  Any overhead expenses associated with that is paid by the Collective from our General Fund donations.

No.  The NIL Store and NIL Marketplace are managed by a 3rd party company deployed by the University and not associated with the Collective.   The NIL Store sells athlete branded merchandise with a percentage of the profits going to the athletes.  The NIL Marketplace is a passive marketplace available to connect athletes with corporations.

The Green and The Gold Collective has its own branded merchandise store.  Twenty percent of the revenue generated by the sales of this merchandise goes to the Collective for use in paying student athletes for NIL deals.

The Collective is for anyone that is interested in the success of Bison Athletics.  The whole purpose of a Collective is to allow everyone to participate and make a difference with monthly memberships for as little as $10/mo.  Yes, large donors are important.  But, large one time donations are inconsistent and unpredictable, thus difficult to rely on.  A critical function of the Collective is to receive and consolidate large numbers of small monthly donations.  Everyone in Bison Nation can and should become members for as little as $10/mo!  Monthly members are what’s consistent and reliable!

Financial opportunity isn’t the only deciding factor in considering the transfer portal.  NDSU student athletes overwhelmingly love NDSU and prefer to stay.  So, NIL opportunity is absolutely a factor, but not always the biggest factor.  In 2023 we lost numerous football, men’s basketball, and wrestling athletes to the portal.  In all cases they went to a school that had a Collective in place while NDSU did not.  Having a supported Collective in place is critical to keeping players in the future.

The goal of the Collective is to retain all our athletes that are making a difference for our programs and keep them out of the transfer portal.  While the coaches and administration can’t be involved in this process, its long been a tenant of Bison Athletics that success is based on merit.  Thus, we will prioritize those that are making the biggest contribution or have the most potential to contribute to our success.  In 2024 we have provided NIL payments to all returning players on the football and men’s basketball teams.

While the administration can’t be involved in the process, they can make players aware of who we are and how to contact us.  We have met with many of our current teams.  We encourage them to register with us, and we currently have 122 student athletes registered.  Athletes can reach out to us directly with their needs and/or ideas on how to pursue NIL deals for them.  We have an open dialogue going with many current athletes.

The reality is, the more funding we have the broader set of athletes we can help and the more high profile potential transfers we can keep.
